After nearly a month in Mexico riding motorcycles and documenting the infamous Baja 1000 off-road race, Justin and Kyra have returned to the States with a plethora of photos and exciting stories of their misadventures. A dozen images from their journey down the Baja peninsula will be on display at The One Motorcycle Show in Portland, OR this weekend. Each of these limited-edition prints tells a unique tale of their trip, and were resin coated onto a particle-board mounting system by Panda Lab in Seattle.

WESTx1000 was conceived in a coin-op laundry room in the Los Feliz neighborhood of Los Angeles. What started as an excuse to ride dirt bikes in Baja, has become an online portal into the lives of two overzealous individuals, love drunk and eager for their next (motorcycle?) adventure.

Documenting the infamous Baja 1000 off-road race, exploring the backroads of the Pacific Northwest, circumnavigating Japan on small sport bikes, or riding dual-sports from Barstow to Vegas, the idea stays the same: “If you get far enough away you’ll be on your way back home.” – Tom Waits

In October, Justin Coffey and Kyra Sacdalan will embark upon an epic motorcycle-meets-surf adventure. The idea is to ride a pair of dual-sport motorcycles from Long Beach to La Paz and back, more than 1,000 miles each way. The goal is to witness the start of the 47th Tecate SCORE Baja 1000, which will take place on November 12th in Ensenada, before riding south toward Scorpion Bay. The adventure will be featured in Overland Journal and SLIDE Magazine, as well as on Expedition Portal. A short film, shot and edited by Pursuit of the Arbitrary, will highlight our experience, in addition to a long-form editorial piece and photo feature which will be produced by Justin.

Once the couple return to the United States, they’ll curate a collection of photographs which will be displayed in Caffé Vita coffee shops up and down the west coast, as well as a gallery debut at Deus Ex Machina in Venice, CA. The intention of the trip – other than the adventure of it all – is to utilize small displacement dual-sport motorcycles to explore the Baja peninsula; searching for surf, camping along the coast, eating interesting things and meeting extraordinary people along the way. They’ll take advantage of any opportunity to ride off-road, avoiding highways and overpopulated areas at all costs… carrying only the essentials, eating and drinking only what they can afford, and traveling as fast (or slow) as they want.

This is neither the first nor the last time someone traveled south to surf, but Justin feels they’ll be able to add a little excitement to what is already sure to be an interesting adventure – riding small displacement motorcycles more than two-thousand miles, to witness one of the most spectacular motorsport events on earth, the Baja 1000.

Hell On Wheels MOTO-X Rally 2013

Deep within the cockles of a motorcyclist’s heart exists a mysterious vein, a vein with little known evolutionary function but a vein that plays a critical role in the development of a motorcycling Homo sapien. This vein, the dirt vein (from the Latin vena dirticus), is actually a small, glandular recording device that instantaneously increases the human heart rate upon sight, sound, or smell of a dirt bike. The growth of the dirt vein begins in early childhood, usually just after learning to ride a bicycle. It quickly doubles in size as the bicycling homo sapien transitions from sidewalk to dirt, in most cases a few months after the training wheels come off. The dirt vein reaches full maturity at the exact moment when the off-road bicycling Homo sapien encounters a motocross bike for the very first time. The knobby tires, the symphony of combustion, the aroma of exhaust; all stimuli cataloged in perfectly preserved format for the duration of its being. A truly remarkable organism, the fully matured dirt vein replays this encounter routinely during the lifespan of the motorcycling Homo sapien, in some documented cases well over 600,000 times.
